« The Man in the Portrait »

For HNOC’s 2024 Student Writing Contest, we invited students from across the country to create colorful identities for the mysterious subjects in the 26 portraits featured in our « Unknown Sitters » exhibition! After receiving more than 1000 entries, HNOC selected winners across three age groups.

Today, we are excited to feature « The Man in the Portrait » by Kyrie Melancon, an 9th grade student at Frederick A. Douglass High School in New Orleans, who is among our high school winners. Kyrie wrote this moving short story in response to the portrait « Man in overalls, » painted between 1930 and 1935 by Daniel Webster Whitney.

Who do you see in this portrait? Visit « Unknown Sitters » and tell us who they are: https://ow.ly/AS7t50SOmvk
